For an entire generation of song lovers, SP Balasubramanyam is a god. They love his songs and he too has mesmerized audiences for nearly 4 decades with his beautiful voice which is surely one-of-its-kind.
Apart from giving playback to leading heroes, his experimentation with voice and the variations while giving playback even to character artistes, got him fans all over the world.
Yet, despite all his fame and name, Balasubramanyam no longer sings for as many films and many continue to wonder as to why the younger generation of music directors don’t get him to sings songs anymore.
Well, Balu himself is totally in sync with the change that has happened in the Telugu industry and says that change was but natural. “Though I don’t sing as many songs as I did in the past, I still sing those that are offered to me,” says he.
While he has cut down on playback singing, he says doing stage shows and singing amidst live audience gives him immense pleasure. He adds that people continue to love him even in places like the US and UK.
“Change is inevitable. When Ghantasala sir was at the peak of his career, we would get a chance to sing when he could not spare time. During those days, I could only give playback for small heroes. But, we must all respect change.
The boys who are singing these days are no less than any of us. All of them are immensely talented and sing beautifully. However, if someone comes to me with a song these days, I first ask them as to why they have come to me and only then accept the offer.
We may not be singing all songs, but surely the ones we sang in the past will remain there for another 10 generations. That gives me immense joy and nothing can take away that satisfaction and pride from me. Still, I will sing till I can. For that, god should be kind,” says SP Balasubramanyam.
