Story:
The movie OK Bangaram is said to be a sequel to Mani Ratnam’s earlier Alaipayuthey (2000), which deals with the problems persisting in marital life. Earlier Mani’s Mouna Ragam (1986) dealt with the subject of a girl forced into arranged marriage by her parents, and the life thereafter of the couple. Both the movies were brilliantly dealt by Mani showcasing the sensitivity of every nuance in life. None can beat this master-storyteller indeed!
It is about people living independently away from home – free from all the rules and regulations of family. The film takes a look on the present generation, their attitudes, their values, and traditional beliefs.
OK Bangaram is the story of two youngsters who meet and fall in love and starts living together. Dulquer and Nithya are ambitious individuals who want to go abroad and settle in life. They meet and fall in love. Without any commitments or promises they decide to live together. But they land at the crossroads of their life when the time comes to take a decision for them to continue their live-in-relationship via marital status. Would they get into wedlock or go their own ways as if nothing happened between them? The movie wonderfully focuses on the problems and conflicts that arise in live-in relationships. Mani Ratnam has proved once again that he has mastered the art of storytelling on celluloid dealing with such sensitive subjects.
Performances:
Talking about the characters or the performances, you cannot individually judge Taara and Adhi. Yeah! we prefer to call them with the given character names, since we haven't really seen Nithya Menen and Dulquer Salmaan on screen. They make you believe in the characters and lets you travel along with them.
Taara and Aadhi makes an adorable pair and OK Bangaram is all about the life they have given to the catalytic events narrated by Mani Ratnam. Prakash Raj and Leela Samson has done their job well as the supporting cast.
Plus Points:
PC Sreeram’s camera work is splendid. Right from the word go and till to the end, PC Sreeram’s cinematography gives you a feeling of pleasantness. Mani Ratnam deftly handled the movie in his inimitable style.
Minus Points:
AR Rahman’s composition fails to impress the audiences. Even background score was seen out of sync with the movie. Sadly, first half just drags while the second half brings the movie to life.
Technical Aspects:
Pure Class. P C Sreeram and Mani Ratnam makes you feel nostalgic, taking back to the locations of Sakhi. P.C. Sreeram's cinematography takes the film notches higher. He plays with the hues and the lights and sets the mood for the film, never really letting the frame have any jarring element.
Mani Ratnam's lives up to the unconditional love and respect he gets. He played it safe by adding a urbane touch to his own old classics. Initially the movie might appear very artificial and slow but Mani does his magic with each scene and by the end, the characters grow on you.
A R Rahman waves his musical wand through out the film. The songs gets stuck in the mind after the movie and they might never leave your playlist if you could connect with OK Bangaram. Especially the back ground music in the last 30 mins with the single vocal, makes you realize why he is a legend of Indian cinema.
Analysis:
OK Kanmani takes on the present day traditional value systems and beliefs, in the backdrop of live-in relationships or pre-marital affairs.
Verdict:
Mani Ratnam is finally back on the pedestal with OK Bangaram. However, It is neither a classic nor a master piece, but is a journey you should surely witness. If you are OK with the slow narrative style, you got to go watch OK Bangaram and fall in love with Taara and Aadhi.
