Chennai: A teenager was killed and two of his friends injured after cops on traffic duty along the 80-feet road in Saligramam allegedly pushed their two-wheeler when the boys broke through a traffic stop on Saturday. The incident occurred around 10.45 am.
The three boys, riding on Honda Dio scooter, had taken a right turn from Arcot road into the 80-feet road when K.K. Nagar traffic reserve inspector Sargunam and constable Sivanandam flagged the two-wheeler down. It is believed the three also jumped the signal.
The boys then attempted to evade the two cops and were in motion, when one of the policemen used a lathi and pushed the occupants. Nineteen-year-old V.Selvam, who was riding the scooter, lost control and crashed into the median. The other two occupants were thrown off the vehicle but Selvam hit the sharp wedges along the median. A mob comprising locals then gathered to thrash the two policemen involved in the incident.
Eyewitnesses claim they saw two boys with injuries to their abdomens. “There were intestines splattered on the median and on the road. We thought that two boys were dead,” says P.Kumar (43), who runs a roadside eatery nearby.
According to an FIR filed at the K.K. Nagar police station later, by one of the pillion riders and Selvam’s friend, G.Raja (20), the cops “stretched both their hands to stop the vehicle”.
“But before my friend could stop the vehicle, one of the cops threw a lathi at us. That caused my friend to lose control of the vehicle and he hit the median,” the complaint states.
Raja further alleges the cops “pulled” another friend after the fall, which led to a sharp wedge tearing into his abdomen. While Raja suffered wounds to his stomach, the second pillion rider, Vignesh, escaped with minor injuries. Immediately after the crash, the two policemen were chased by a mob of local and were beaten severely. Their patrol vehicle and a police two-wheeler were also damaged in the frenzy. The situation was brought under control only after police personnel, including senior police officers, rushed to the scene to pacify the angry locals.
Selvam’s body has been moved to the Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem while his friends were moved to a private hospital. The boys are residents of Mettukuppam and were on their way to watch a movie, a friend said.
