Tension erupted at the 'National Book Fair' in Kolkata when a Bangladeshi stall was found to be containing brochures in which Pakistan occupied Kashmir was shown as being a part of Pakistan and the Line of Control was depicted as the international border between India and Pakistan.

Officials from the Bangladesh embassy arrived and apologized to the protesting BJP cadre and ordered an inquiry into the incident apart from removing the brochures. The point is that this is not the first time such an incident has happened. Maps in Pakistan typically depict the same things as do maps in China.

Every time India notices such irregularities, they bring it to the notice of the concerned countries and some diplomatic tussle takes place after which the dust settles down before it rises again! These maps reflect the ground reality that a major part of Kashmir is in occupation of Pakistan and China. Merely crying out loud that Kashmir belongs to India completely will not change this reality. Neither will diplomatic protests make any difference! India will have to win back Kashmir and that is definitely not going to happen through negotiations.

It is far better for the present government armed with a decisive mandate to do something about this issue and resolve it once and for all instead of leaving the conflict to our future generations. One surgical operation is what it takes. Better to boldly decide the issue once and for all instead of losing thousands of soldiers every year along the borders. Once a coalition government is back in place, it would lack the necessary political will to undertake such a major step!
