Tollywood Heroes : Life After Debut Films

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://timesofap.com//newsimage1/cinema/2015/11/26/Tollywood-Heroes(1).jpg?i=61303" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="img" border="0" height="213" src="http://timesofap.com//newsimage1/cinema/2015/11/26/Tollywood-Heroes(1).jpg?i=61303" width="320" /></a>Nagarjuna is pushing the distributors of “Akhil” hard to run the film despite mounting losses. Why such a huge pressure to make a debut film a super hit. Did the success or failure of debut film matter to any of the star heroes over the past two decades? An in-depth analysis.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It is now official: “Akhil” has become the biggest disaster in recent times. What was meant to be a perfect launch vehicle for Akhil proved an anti-climax for Nagarjuna fans and fans of Akkineni family who were waiting for months for a dream debut. Made at a whopping budget of Rs.45 crores, the film has made distributors in both overseas and domestic markets sore over the losses piled up post-release.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Despite Nag’s involvement, the distributors are in no mood to run the film despite huge losses despite no big releases till December even as Nagarjuna has promised to compensate them for his upcoming film “Soggade Chinni Nayana”. Note that debut films for a film-family is never a matter of life-and-death if you go by the history of debut launches over the past 25 years. They were just a formality to launch the star hero and success or mega-success didn’t dent the confidence of the film families.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The closest example to the debut of “Akhil” is the debut film of Jagapathi Babu in 1989 – “Adavilo Abhimanyudu” by Jagapathi Productions’ Rajendra Prasad. It had a similar complicated plot but good drama and emotions but the film sank without a trace. But Jagapathi Babu recovered and carved a good niche for himself in Tollywood becoming a bankable hero who was once seen as a replacement to Shoban Babu.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Even for Nagarjuna’s debut film in 1985 – “Vikram”, the film was a runaway hit but ANR at that time said Nagarjuna should act in better stories and original scripts -something he took more seriously in the 1990s bringing him dramatic success.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Victory Venkatesh had a more dramatic debut in “Kaliyuga Pandavalu” with a sensational story and powerful dialogues by Parachuri Brothers and he never looked back.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Pawn Kalyan‘s debut film “Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbayi” in 1996 is another great example of why debut doesn’t matter in the long-run. He is today one of Tollywood’s craziest stars but his debut film with Supriya bombed at the box-office as fans thought it was a routine love story without any drama. But Pawan Kalyan built his innings in the first phase with some great hits after that and created his own body language and style that has become the toast of Tollywood.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mahesh Babu has had a dramatic debut in 1999 with “Rajakumarudu” with K Raghavendra Rao as director. The film was an average success and just got registered as a launch vehicle for the Prince. It showed him as an all-rounder who can dance, fight, emote and crack comedy.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
NTR Jr. is the hero who had the unluckiest debut in 2001 with “Ninnu Choodalani” launched by Ramoji Rao. The film bombed heavily at the box-office and it took “Student No.1” by SS Rajamouli to establish him as the real hero. Despite not having any Godfather, NTR Jr. struggled with a string of films before “Student No.1” which may have won him good name but not enough sizzle to be taken seriously. This includes “Bala Ramayanam” and “Ninnu Choodalani”. After 15 years, NTR Jr. is now a serious challenger to the legacy of star families, his next “Nannaku Prematho” is his 25th film. (See report 15 years of NTR Jr.)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Prabhas debuted in 2002 with an angry man look in “Eeshwar” which became a sleeper hit but later struggled for a few years before films like “Chatrapati” established him as a superstar. Of course, from the beginning, Prabhas had the persona of a Superstar who had it in him to belt out hits.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Allu Arjun debuted in 2003 with “Gangotri” with K Raghavendra Rao again as director. The film showed Arjun in a deglamorised role and became known as a musical hit but didn’t raise any expectations of him as a serious contender – it took a decade of experimentation and improvisation along with re-engineered looks to make Allu Arjun one of the most stylish stars in Tollywood who is a treat to watch in any film – whatever be the length of his role.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Ram Charan’s debut film in 2007 had the right emotional connect with the audience in Puri Jagannadh directed “Chirutha”. He was an auto driver’s son in the film and had all the elements of an enchanting love story, a good revenge element and plenty of emotional and comedy scenes. The songs by Mani Sharma created the year’s biggest blockbuster and Ram Charan has arrived in the first movie itself.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Nag Chaitanya debuted in 2009 with “Josh” directed by Vasu Varma and launched by Dil Raju. The movie had a dramatic story with a modern message but had too many elements jumbled into one movie. It still has great TV ratings but the movie flopped beyond Nag’s imagination. Nag Chaitanya recovered with some hit movies like “Yeh Maaya Chesaave” , “100% Love” and “Manam” and is creating a brand of youthful films to his credit.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What are the key messages coming from an analysis of all the debut films of the star heroes of the last decade or two? Not many except that debut films are not the only passport to stardom and superstardom of aspiring star heroes. It doesn’t make any sense to over-invest in the debut film of a star hero like Akhil who still has many years to go before he may also be catapulted to super stardom in future. It takes a lot of effort, discipline, strategy and planning to get to the top and stay in the race. There is an element of luck in the way the fans connect to the star hero but in the end a lot depends on how carefully one choses story plots and the directors in acting in films which are suited to the strengths and body-language of the respective heroes -even as the audiences expect something better and different each time.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The most important thing to note is that there is higher margin for error when it comes to star heroes. Fans are more patient with them than with say someone like Naani, Sarvanand, Siddharth etc. So, chill Nagarjuna. Don’t panic because “Akhil” has flopped and don’t rush to make it a “certified” hit at the cost of the distributors. Superstars are born over atleast a decade and do not necessarily show every facet of their calibre in the first movie itself. With none of Nagarjuna’s films ever touching a collection figure of Rs.40 crores, it is foolish to make a film on a budget of Rs.45 crores and then push your luck hard to make it a deemed hit. There is life after this “Akhil” provided they learn from the debacle. And there is life after a debut film, even if it is a flop.</div>

Especially when there is an argument that outsiders are not finding enough theatres and chances to make it big in the industry, analysts feel that even the family-backed heroes might slip into trouble soon.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As we confirmed already, NTR's Nannaku Prematho and Balayya's Dictator are arriving on January 8th and 14th respectively. Two biggies from the same Nandamuri family are arriving in just a week gap, and 30% of fans are unlikely to pick both. Because it's the question of money for many middle-class people and C-centre folks. They will be picking only those films that give them maximum satisfaction for ticket money. Even family audiences will also think in similar way. After Balayya recedes from acting career, then Mokshagna is likely to enter the scene. Then we will have Jr NTR, Mokshagna, Kalyan Ram fighting from Nandamuri family for placements. So, the one who delivers better content will have more chances of succeeding than everyone.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Coming to Mega family, this set of heroes enjoy the biggest threat from each other. Barring Pawan Kalyan, we have Charan, Bunny, Saidharam, Varun Tej and Sirish in the game. As these heroes are continuously making films, at one point films of their cousins are likely to clash with them. If arrangements are made for two weeks gap, no doubt the same middle class money troubles will play the bigger role and fans are likely to wait and watch the best film among the two. Same is the case with Akkineni family who has Nagarjuna, Chaitu, Akhil and sometimes Sushanth in the race. With this family inclined towards romantic films most of time, their producers might eye similar seasons, making the Brand Akkineni lock horns with each other.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Another scenario is that, if not family wars, wars with friends are also inevitable. Charan is likely to face Akhil and Rana one day; Bunny might get Prabhas in his way; and so on. With two many heroes running for the show, these wars can't be avoided. Even if they plan very cautiously, our ways of missing release dates, delaying production and unnecessary postponements will lead only to a fight at box office.</div>

We all are very much aware about Allu Arjun, Sirish and Daggubati Rana sharing a superb friendship bond. Each of them makes sure to attend every family and festive occasion at either of their homes. As Diwali is a big celebration time, Bunny invited Rana to their house and the entire Allu family enjoyed some special moments.</div>

That's the latest title registered by Guna Team Works. Happy with the way "Rudhramadevi" collections have shaped out, director and producer Gunasekhar is getting ready to move to his next project. He has registered a title "Prathaparudrudu" earlier, but that sequel of his historic Rudhrama might not happen soon. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Going by the title, we can't reveal what kind of project Gunasekhar is coming up now, but insiders shared that it's a pakka commercial film only. After roping in Bunny for Gona Ganna Reddy role, Guna has promised to Allu Arvind that he will come up with a sensational story for the young hero very soon. Has he written this Veerabhimanyu for him? At the same time, when Guna approached Mahesh to take up this role (which Guna declined doing), our Superstar is said to have promised to do a full-pledged commercial subject with him rather historical flick. It's know that Mahesh got his first stardom through Gunasekhar's Okkadu only. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, who has given nod to Gunasekhar now? Mahesh or Bunny, or anyone else? Who knows, Guna might also work with newcomers like he is dreaming to do from a while. Let's see what our director will reveal about this title in the coming days. With Dil Raju's support, he might also make another historical.</div>

Allu Arjun to target Pawan Kalyan for Sankranthi

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">

<a href="http://timesofap.com//newsimage1/cinema/2015/10/29/Allu-Arjun-and-Kalyan.jpg?i=19332" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="img" border="0" height="213" src="http://timesofap.com//newsimage1/cinema/2015/10/29/Allu-Arjun-and-Kalyan.jpg?i=19332" width="320" /></a>Stylish Star Allu Arjun's new movie shooting is going on at a brisk pace under Boyapati Seenu direction and is getting ready for releasing on this Sankranthi, along with Pawan Kalyan's Sardaar Gabbar Singh. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After the recent success of Rudramadevi, Allu Arjun's fame has gone to the next level. Allu Arjun's Gona Ganna Reddy character in the movie, has received the critics appreciation. Biggies of the film industry appreciated Bunny, for his stupendous performance. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, now the audience are waiting for Allu Arjun's new movie, with great expectations. Boyapati Seenu who gave huge blockbusters to Balayya, is directing the film with his typical mass formula. Just like VV Vinayak, even Boyapati Seenu, is identified for catching the mass audience pulse. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As of now, he is shooting a few action sequences, involving Bunny. Reportedly, those fights are being pictured, using a high level technology. Bunny would be seen in utter stylish appearance in these fights. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The movie is tentatively titled as Sarainodu and the same is almost finalized. However, the official declaration is awaiting.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The movie would be in Sankranthi race, along with Pawan Kalyan's Sardaar Gabbar Singh movie. This is the first time, to have a date clash between Bunny and Pawan films. It should be seen, whether they stick to Sankranthi release or postpone to avoid unnecessary competition.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Along with these both, even NTR's Nannaku Prematho, is aiming for Sankaranthi release, so unless any one big film compromises, the safe game is not possible.</div>

As of now, there is an interesting buzz going on about this film.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Actually police uniform is one aspect that will bring out heroism very easily from any hero. Mega stars like Chiranjeevi and Balayya have made the most of it. In the present generation, Mahesh Babu used khaki to the core. Seems like Bunny also wants to join that gang as he is donning khaki yet again if reports are to be believed. In Race Gurram he was seen wearing khaki dress only partially, that too unofficially. But here in Sarainodu, he's said to be wearing it fully.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A source stated that Allu Arjun will be seen as IPS officer in this film and his serious role stands at par with Raviteja's Vikram Rathore act. Let's see how far our mega hero will impress in this full time police officer role.</div>

Ever since ‘Iddarammayilatho’ in Puri Jagannath direction portrayed Catherine in best of glamorous looks with thunderous thigh show, Bunny appears to have blown away with this beauty. After ‘Iddarammayilatho,’ the newly released ‘Rudhramadevi’ also has Catherine playing Annambika, lover of Gona Ganna Reddy that is Allu Arjun. Episodes shot in between these two have been the whistling moments for Fans and common audience.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now, Bunny is taking forward the same sexy luck of Catherine to his upcoming ‘Sarainodu’ in direction of Boyapati Srinu. The action entertainer although has Rakul Preet Singh doing the main heroine formalities, role offered for Catherine is said to be so powerful. Cat is playing a political character of tough minded MLA to take on a battle with hero Allu Arjun. When Boyapati explained the character, Bunny’s obvious selection was said to be for Catherine and Boyapati agreed for it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

More than glamour, characters of this kind offer heroines to exhibit their artistic skills. Let us see how good Catherine will justify Bunny’s decision.</div>

It looked like Dasari arranged it specially to target Mega family. Dasari also targeted Bruce Lee during this press meet saying that Ram Charan is not caring about industry and releasing him film even knowing that a huge budget film will get impacted by it. Allu Arjun is also present at this event and he not objected Dasari or said anything about it. Bunny being calm and not opposing Dasari at this press meet is what making Mega fans angry at him.</div>

Now it is unfair for anyone to blame "Bruce Lee" for overlapping.</div>
