For decades, Tamil films have been highly popular in India and foreign countries like Singapore and Malaysia, apart from the US. The number of superstars who can deliver an all time blockbuster is far higher than any other film industries in India. However, the films' producers have been facing a huge threat in the form of release dates.
Often, several big budget star films leave a spate of small producers end up with very few screens and as a result, facing severe losses. In order to bring these small film producers out of their sorrows, the Tamil Film Producer's Council has taken a sensational decision today. As per the decision, the big budget films (films made with a budget of 15 crores and above) are allowed to release only on 10 suggested festivals and public holidays.
The list of the release dates include April 14 (Tamil New Year), May 1 (May Day), Aug 15, Sept 17, Oct 21, Nov 10 (Diwali), Dec 25 etc. While this decision naturally made the small producers elated, a handful of big budget producers are worried that two or three big films competing on the same day will affect the trade. The trade will now notice a huge change of release plans among several films. It will surely take few months to realize if the Producer's Council decision is helping the trade or not.
