Jagadeka Veerudu Atiloka Sundari is Mega Star Chiranjeevi’s blockbuster film released in 1990. The film had a record breaking run of over a year in few theaters. The socio-fantasy genre movie was directed by creative director K. Raghavendra Rao. While Chiranjeevi played the first part of the title i.e. Jagadeka Veerudu, Yesteryear diva Sridevi played Atiloka Sundari. Her role in the film is of ‘Apsara’ , a celestial beauty from abode. She is daughter of Lord Indra named Indraja. Star producer Aswini Dutt has ventured with Megastar for the first time. The film was subsequently dubbed in all south Indian languages and into Hindi as Aadmi Aur Apsara cashing in on Sridevi’s popularity.
Jagadeka Veerudu Atiloka Sundari is considered one of the biggest hits of Chiranjeevi. The movie has all the elements for it to be a all time favorite of movie buffs. It has got lively story, great music, aesthetic visuals, comedy, fantasy, drama, thrills and what not. Most audience would watch it over and over again and would never get bored of it. It has to be agreed that stunning beauty of Sridevi has caught with the whims of youngsters. The chemistry between her and Chiranjeevi is main crowd puller. The duo competing each other in duets with their dancing prowess is never again seen. Ilayaraaja’s music acted as catalyst in catapulting the movie to next range. The chartbuster evergreens like Abba Nee Theeyani Debba have inspired many songs even in Bollywood later. Intangible creativity of Raghavendra Rao in glamorizing the movie to visually treat the audience is magical.
Earlier there were reports of remaking the movie with Ram Charan and Sridevi’s elder daughter Jahnavi, however it did not take off. But it will be interesting to see how this fantasy movie would be made in this VFX era.
Interesting facts about the movie:
Two among the orphan kids were played by real life sisters Shalini (Ajith’s wife) and Shamili.
Madhuri Dixit who was then considered rival to Sridevi has danced to Hindi version of Abba Nee Theeyani Debba in her later hit film Beta.
In climax of the movie a fish is shown swallowing the ring, it was wondered how the director designed it in those CG less days.
It has become super hit in Tamil as Kaadhal Devathai, in Hindi as Aadmi Aur Apsara, and in Malayalam as Hai Sundhari.
Mesmerizing shots where Sridevi ascends and descends to skies were wonderfully shot by Cinematographer Ajay Vincent.
‘Haasya Brahma’ Jhandhyala has written dialogues for the movie.
While Sundaram master choreographed, his son Prabhu Deva has assisted him for few songs.
Story
Typically Story is like this, Raju (Chiranjeevi) is a tourist guide in a picturesque hill station of Ooty and a guardian to orphan kids. Accidentally, Indraja (Sridevi), the daughter of Lord Indra encounters with him and seeks his help in finding a ring that is her passport back to abode. An evil witcher Mahadrashta played by Amrish Puri, identifies super powers in her and plans to abduct her. How Raju saves from clutches of villains and whether she finds her ring and leave to her place forms the actual plot of the movie.
