imgThe Competition Commission of India (CCI) has rapped the three major film bodies of Kannada film and entertainment industry, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), the Kannada Film Producers Association (KFPA) and the Karnataka Television Association (KTVA) with a fine of Rs.16,82,204, Rs. 1,68,124 and Rs. 1,74,293 respectively for preventing the release and exhibition of dubbed content belonging to other film and entertainment industries.

The ban on dubbing films and airing of other language programs has been in vogue since 1962, following the declaration of ban by the Sahithya Parishath, to prevent other language dubbing content from invading Kannada cultural heritage. However, the CCI found fault in this ban and did not find justification in the claim of threat for the loss of local culture. It also pointed that there was no legal prohibition on dubbing.

This latest move by the CCI will surely lift the ban in the coming days and pave way for the release of other language films dubbed into Kannada. Until now, most Telugu films enjoyed a direct Telugu release with heavy service tax in Karnataka and most Telugu stars have immense popularity among the Kannada movie lovers, thanks to the similarities in the language and culture of Telugu and Kannada lands.

The Karnataka film and trade bodies that are imposed the CCI fine are yet to comment or take further action. Meanwhile, certain actors and technicians from Karnataka movie industry opine that this fine and the possible future developments might act as detrimental to the livelihood of Kannada actors and technicians.
